October 28, 1996, 5:21 PM EST

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1996--

Provides Primary Care Physicians with Fast Complete Chart Notes
Kurzweil Applied Intelligence, Inc. (NASDAQ:KURZ) today announced a new Windows-based system for creating complete medical reports by voice for primary care clinicians. Kurzweil Clinical Reporter(TM) for Primary Care has been designed as a versatile, intelligent and easy-to-use reporting system that will reduce medical transcription costs, increase reimbursement revenues and reduce the liability risk resulting from incomplete documentation.

Kurzweil Clinical Reporter integrates an advanced primary care medical knowledge base utilizing the standard SOAP-note format, an automated report writer and the award-winning Kurzweil VOICE(TM) for Windows for an interactive approach to collecting patient data and producing medical reports. The clinician is presented with an appropriate set of questions to answer and Kurzweil Clinical Reporter guides the user through the entire process of producing a comprehensive patient report. This methodology ensures the complete and consistent recording of patient encounter information. Designated information can then be extracted for use in clinical databases and clinical data repositories.

"With Kurzweil Clinical Reporter for Primary Care, healthcare institutions and their primary care settings no longer have to make a trade-off when it comes to the quality, accessibility and cost of patient reports," said Thomas E. Brew, Jr., Kurzweil AI's president and chief executive officer. "We work in collaboration with our users to provide the intelligence and structure that will give them the highest quality reports, real-time access to patient information through their existing systems and an opportunity to reduce transcription costs."

Kurzweil Clinical Reporter for Primary Care is also offered with a series of options. These include an on-line coding module, a Voice/Fax module and an on-line prescription writer. Using these options, physicians can complete a task in the same amount of time, and eliminate overhead support costs.

Among the benefits healthcare institutions can expect from Kurzweil Clinical Reporter:

Versatility Key to User Acceptance of Kurzweil Reporter
Kurzweil Clinical Reporter supports voice as the primary data entry method, but input from touch-screen, pen, mouse, bar code and the keyboard is also supported. This versatility ensures maximum efficiency - the clinician can use whatever approach is easiest and quickest. Kurzweil Clinical Reporter also provides the user the ability to move seamlessly to and from structured reporting and free-text dictation.

"Now that 20 spoken words can generate a comprehensive multiple-page report that meets practice guidelines, we expect users will opt for voice-enabled, clinical reporting," said Jonathan Bower, Kurzweil AI's director of product management, referring to the library of trigger phrases which are recognized by Kurzweil Clinical Reporter to prompt the standard documentation of clinical events. "But there are always options available including a free text mode that is up to 97% accurate. This freedom to choose is critical to our users. And when clinician needs are met and they use the system consistently, the benefits increase for the healthcare institution as well."

Kurzweil AI manages the systems integration process, providing a seamless link between Kurzweil Clinical Reporter and hospital or department information systems. This ensures when a patient moves beyond primary care, to see a specialist or for tests or other procedures, the record moves with them electronically. The complete report can be faxed, printed or forwarded electronically. Pertinent case data can be automatically transferred by discrete data fields to billing, medical records, clinical databases or other applications - wherever they reside.
